“You’re in love with Devlin,” he uttered the words and it knocked the air out of her lungs.

“What? How? I mean, you know?” she asked.

He laughed softly, “Of course I do. You don’t think I grew curious when you started disappearing all the time and started spending less and less time with me?” he asked.

He didn’t sound upset at all. He was calm and composed and it confused Jesse. “When did you find out?”

“Probably shortly after it started. I saw how you looked at her that night we had dinner at her house. I’d never seen you look at someone, anyone, even me, like that.”

  “Oh, God. Michael,” she said.

“Hey, listen, we have a great thing going here. I knew a long time ago I wasn’t the one for you. We had fun, we had a great life, but eventually we had to grow up. I’m not mad or upset with you, actually I’ve been very amused waiting for you to come and tell me about her, about you two.”

Oh, Michael. Had she misjudged him so?

“I feel like such an ass,” she said.

“You should, you lied to me. But you’re happy and that’s all that matters.”

“Really? I feel guilty all over again.”

“You should, in case you forgot I’m a great guy, and I love you. All I ever wanted was to see you happy.”

“So this, me and Devlin, it doesn’t affect our working relationship?” she asked.

“It doesn’t affect anything. We work great together and Devlin’s designs are genius. Why would I let something as trivial as pride get in the way of that?”

“I lost sight of how amazing you are.”

“Yes, you did,” Michael said, wrapping his arms around her. “I just hope she loves you half the way I do,” he said.

“She does Michael, and you’re going to love her.”

“I don’t doubt it,” he said.

She was so relieved by their conversation. Shortly after, she left the apartment and went to see Devlin.

When she got there, she was so excited she couldn’t wait to see her. Devlin opened the door and a smile instantly lit up her features as she let Jesse in.

“I love you, Devlin,” Jesse said, taking Devlin in her arms.

“I love you too, Jesse. What’s going on? Why are you so excited?”

“I have some great news. I went to talk to Michael and he already knew everything. He doesn’t care. He knew we were seeing other from the very beginning.”

“Oh, my God. Are you serious?” Devlin asked in disbelief.

“Yeah, I was equally as shocked too.”

“He must be a very special person to be this cool about it,” Devlin said.

“I’d forgotten just how much. But I’m so happy right now. We can finally be together.”

Devlin smiled. “Finally,” she said as Jesse took her back in her arms.

Neither one of them knew what the future held, but looking back, both Devlin and Jesse realized there wasn’t really anything keeping them apart, except each other. The moment they accepted it, they found each other.
